Recently our Growing Futures students enjoyed a visit from Craig L, Cyber Protect Officer from Devon and Cornwall Police.
He talked about how we can keep ourselves, and our information (passwords, etc.) safe when going online. We discussed AI, scams to look out for, creating secure passwords, and talked about jobs within digital technology industries.
The students then had a go at a code cracking game where they used logic to break the 4-digit pin. The game was great fun, and everyone worked it out, getting faster each time!
From the session, Craig was able to identify potential in some of the students for careers in cyber protection, and follow up with parents.

In our afternoon session, Emma came to talk about digital skills, and carried out an audit of what the students know about using online services, such as banks and contacting a doctor.
“It was great to see how the students engaged with the digital workshop. By taking part in a skills audit, they identified their strengths and areas for development. They then completed tailored online sessions to help build and improve these digital skills. This will support their ongoing development in areas such as digital safety, everyday digital tasks, and future employment opportunities.” – Emma Hill, Impact & Evaluation Officer at Newquay Orchard
They then had a go at designing their own video game character before chilling out with some fun console gaming to end the day!
Everyone learned something from this fun and informative day, and tried something new. The students came away with a better understanding of the benefits and risks associated with the digital world, and how to navigate it safely.
Growing Futures is our alternative education provision for ages 16-18, or up to 24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Get in touch to book onto one of our upcoming open days, on Wednesday 8th or 15th April!
