Meet Matthew – Washing Up Hero and Joy to Have Around

Matthew, Newquay Orchard

Matthew is the intern bringing a breath of fresh air to the cafe crew at Newquay Orchard. Matthew is working at Heart and Soul for a full academic year from September 2023 to July 2024, so we asked Matthew a few questions to shine a light on what it’s like being an intern in the cafe.

“I like working with lots of different people, especially Ben and I enjoy being able to work outdoors when the weather is nice.”

Matthew has been learning things like harvesting herbs, table clearing and arranging the table flowers. Plus, he’s been creating eye-catching posters – you might have seen a few around!

Matthew acknowledges the supportive environment the Heart & Soul team offer, he appreciates the way they guide him through tasks and recognise his efforts.

His coworkers describe working with Matthew as ‘joyful, happy and rewarding’ and they are as a team all round ‘happier when Matthew is in’.

An inclusive and supportive culture is a core principle at Newquay Orchard, and, with a few simple adjustments we have been able to create an environment where everyone can thrive. Things like providing a handy trolley for carrying items and Matthew was particularly thrilled with the large apron Ben got him for washing up duty and a comfortable stool when he needs to take a short rest.

When asked about the tasks he enjoys the most Matthew replied ‘Washing up and chatting with all the customers’

“Working with Matthew has helped develop our ability to be patient, more caring and be more self aware of how our moods and behaviours can impact others. His enthusiasm is infectious and he has the best eye for when a customer requires something; he always lets me know!”

When asked what the best thing about his internships is, Matthew summed up his time with a simple yet powerful word: “working!”. Highlighting the fulfilment he finds in being useful and contributing to the Heart & Soul team.

Watching the team work with Matthew and seeing him learn and thrive in his role, reminds us to create workplaces that value and celebrate diversity, making room for everyone to shine.

So, next time you’re in, give Matthew a wave – you’ll likely get the warmest smile in return!
