International Women's Day - Newquay Orchard

On International Women’s Day, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible women leaders at Newquay Orchard.

From CEO Charlotte, to Hetty managing our sustainable horticulture, each woman brings unique perspectives, strengths, and a sincere dedication to championing diversity, inclusivity, and female empowerment in both the workplace and our wider community.

Chief Executive Officer, Charlotte Hill

Charlotte, Leading the Charge for Gender Equality

Charlotte, the Orchard’s CEO, emphasises the importance of an inclusive culture and encouragement within the workplace and in the community. She believes in breaking down stereotypes from a young age and championing diverse role models.

We need to ensure work stereotyping is a thing of the past, i.e. certain jobs for certain genders and this starts from a very young age, in homes and throughout school, if you see or hear something that could be limiting, call it out.”

Charlotte’s advice to young women aspiring to leadership positions is simple;

Be yourself, go with your heart, find women who inspire you and believe you can.

Jenny Hindson

Jenny Hindson, our COO, is committed to developing diversity and inclusion within the team at Newquay Orchard and emphasises the need to listen to each other and support one another’s individual needs. She believes in creating a flexible work environment where everyone can bring their skills and talents to the table. She also thinks there’s great value in mentorship in developing a women’s career, having someone to help you navigate the challenges of leadership positions is so helpful.

I have met many amazing women in leadership positions but it can be lonely and scary as you move up the ladder.  It can be really hard sometimes to understand the barriers we are facing and what to do about it.  We can turn in on ourselves and doubt our own ability.  We have come a long way in creating equality, diversity and inclusivity but there is still a lot that needs to change.”

Carly Jones, Marketing and Events Manager feels empowered in a women-led team and highlights the strength and supportiveness of the Orchard’s organisational culture, where health, wellbeing, and trust are paramount. Carly appreciates the environment where she is encouraged to lead, execute decisions, and feels valued in her contributions.

Sarah Anthony

Sarah Anthony, the Education Manager, ensures that educational programs at Newquay Orchard are inclusive and accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities. She emphasises the importance of creating a nurturing and supportive learning environment where diversity is celebrated. Sarah draws inspiration from women like Rosa Parks and her own mother, who embody resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Lyn Trewella

Lyn Trewella

Lyn Trewella, Operations Manager, values the sense of community and feels valued and empowered by a supportive network in the wider community who contribute and support the Orchard. She believes women bring unique qualities to leadership and management, including organisation, empathy, and a person-centred approach.

Hetty Ninnis

Hetty Ninnis

Hetty Ninnis, our Community Growing Manager, grew up on a farm when her Mum was as active on the farm as her father. And with such a strong role model she is actively breaking down barriers and old stereotypes in western horticulture, such as ‘the male farmer in a tractor’, stating strongly that women have always been very present in farming:

“Women farm across the globe and take the main role in growing crops and running farms in many countries and cultures.”

Hetty believes in promoting inclusivity for all identity groups and ensuring that outdoor work is seen as a valid and fulfilling career path, making sure everyone, including young women, see farming and working outdoors as valid and highly rewarding. Furthermore:

We have to make sure Horticulture is just as welcoming to all identity groups LGBTQI+ and BPOC. Fortunately Groups like the Landworkers Alliance are making sure this happens in all areas of Landwork.

We are incredibly proud of all our female leaders, team members, volunteers and community champions. As well as our male colleagues and friends who support and advocate for women, enabling us all to make meaningful contributions and to drive progress towards a more inclusive and equal society.
