We’re flying the flag as one of the UK’s best greenspaces

Our volunteers and delivery officers have recently raised a Green Flag Award which is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

2021 was a record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award, as the scheme marks its 25th year. Newquay Orchard is one of over 2,000 celebrating success after being given the award in October.

Our urban greenspace played a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely outdoors.

Jack Greaves, a delivery officer at Newquay Orchard, is extremely proud to have been awarded the green flag again and says the greenspace couldn’t have achieved it without the help of our volunteers.

Jack said: “A lot of work goes into ensuring our greenspace is a place where everyone from the local community can come to learn, play and relax. Newquay Orchard’s volunteers are a friendly, dedicated and passionate bunch of people and I for one enjoy seeing how we can maintain and help our environment thrive alongside them.”

Newquay Orchard has also achieved the much coveted Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management of its historic features.

Commenting on the news that Newquay Orchard has achieved the Green Flag Award standard, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Newquay Orchard worthy of a Green Flag Award.”

“To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that Newquay Orchard has high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and is a place that supports people to live healthy lives.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
