KOWEL GWENEN (THE BEEHIVE)

Kowel Gwenen is the new community building here at Newquay Orchard, completed in early 2021. We were a patch of land 6 years ago and now this not-so-secret garden has grown into a centre for culture, education and collaboration. Kowel Gwenen is nestled into the heart of our community field.
Canteen at the Orchard, The Food Hub, the Co-workspace, and the Newquay Orchard team are all based in Kowel Gwenen. This building is a flourishing example of how a community can come together to collaborate, co-work and create.
Kowel Gwenen is Cornish for ‘Beehive’ – the inspiration behind the building’s architecture, paying homage to nature’s hardest worker, the humble bee. Without bees the produce we grow and the wildflowers we admire here at the Orchard would cease to exist. Read more about how we have promoted pollinators here.
Using sustainable and reclaimed materials wherever possible, inside and out, Kowel Gwenen is a successful low carbon building project. Made possible through support from funders, our incredible team of volunteers and the imagination of the Orchard family, it illustrates how our ethos ‘built by the community, for the community’ is ever present in everything we do at Newquay Orchard.
The space will provide a stage to performers. A dining table to friends and families. A place where community groups can convene. A desk space for creatives, freelancers and start-ups. A space for kindness, for hope, and for community. A place for everyone.
