On Saturday 18th May 2019, Newquay Community Orchard will once again be home to local makers, enterprises and entertainers for the hugely popular Spring Fayre.
The Orchard Spring Fayre, now in its 3rd year, aims to bring the community together and promote sustainable living by showcasing a diversity of Cornish produce, delicious local food and family friendly entertainment.
This free event is open to the whole community and shows off the best of our town. With prominent local vendors and food and drink providers from the local area set to join us on the day, the fayre is already shaping up to be one of the best yet.
Newquay Community Orchard Project Administrator, Lyn Trewella, said: “This year’s Spring Fayre is not one to miss. We have a record number of stalls in place to create a huge community buzz with some fantastic local names.”
Throughout the afternoon there will be a whole host of stalls to check out, including high quality arts and crafts and several delicious food vendors offering quality meats and fresh produce and a brilliant selection of vegan delights.
Lyn added: “Families are always welcome to explore the Orchard and discover all the amazing features of the site. On the day of the fayre, children and adults alike will find entertainment across the Orchard – from our famed storyteller and face painters to foraging, bush crafts, live music and yoga amongst the apple blossom.”
There are many beautiful pieces of art to be found from Lazique Lazer Creations, Gemstones by Lesley and Lou’s Doodle Art. Sprout Health Foods, Vicky’s Bread, B Skincare and Innoscent Cleaning are just a few of the amazing healthy, natural and ethical companies sharing their passions on the day.
In the heart of the Orchard, visitors can enjoy storytelling by Nathan Mansbridge, relax to chilled sounds from Vinyl Collective and join in with Oll an Gwella male voice choir as they spread the joy of singing. In the Den, kids can get back to nature by taking part in bush craft activities with Matt Tolson or get creative and crafty with Treehouse Newquay.
The Orchard team are hugely excited to announce that this year we welcome the talents of Urban Playground to entertain crowds in our amphitheatre. This performance announces the start of our redevelopment of this space into a stunning 600-seater outdoor amphitheatre that will create a major new arts and performance venue for Newquay.
Urban Playground will be performing their show ZOO HUMANS. The half hour performance will be followed by a workshop with audience members keen to learn more about their art and try some of their moves.
Inspired by the shocking fact that a third of the UK’s young people spend less time outdoors than prisoners, this piece sees the UPG Team combine David Attenborough’s smooth narrative with parkour and dance in a Kafkaesque reality where a group of humans are on the edge of forgetting how to move.
Lyn said: “As our Orchard continues to grow, we’re looking to expand the range of things we can offer. Music, dance and theatre is something we’re all passionate about and we have big plans for the future as far as the arts are concerned with the development of our outdoor amphitheatre.”
Newquay Community Orchard is a community-led project that has established a multi-function green space where people of all walks of life can come together to work, rest and play. The Orchard provides a sanctuary, a venue, a community hub and community volunteering for the whole community of Newquay.
Luke Berkeley, Managing Director of Newquay Community Orchard, said: “We are so pleased to welcome so many new and exciting vendors and exhibitors to this year’s Spring Fayre. The Fayre is a fantastic way to celebrate all the Orchard has become and plans to be.”
“I can’t wait to see local people and visitors from across the county come to learn a bit more about the Orchard and have a fun day out as well.”
The fayre also aims to help families to do their week’s shop in a plastic free environment. Visitors will be able to buy: mushrooms, chillies and veggies from People & Gardens; seasonal veggies from Cows and Sows; local beer and gin from Atlantic Brewery; preserves, spreads and sauces from Cornish Larder; oils from Hard Pressed; vegan cakes from Renaissance Cakery; handmade surf wax from Super Tube Designs; fresh cut blooms from Tide Flowers; and pantry items from local health food store Sprout. If you want seasonal local food delivered to your door, representatives from Riverford Farm and Real Food Box will be there to talk to you about their food box schemes.
The Orchard team are encouraging the Newquay community to come on foot, by bike or by bus to encourage all residents of Newquay to live a more sustainable life.
Luke said: “Our mission up at the Orchard is something we know our community want to support – saving the planet. As we’re only a short walk from the town centre we look forward to welcoming visitors, where possible, on foot. If not, why not come by bike or jump on the bus.”
Lyn concluded: “This is set to be a wonderful day simply celebrating the best of our town, with our community at the heart of the fun.”
The fayre will take place at Newquay Community Orchard, which is situated on seven acres of land gifted by the Duchy on the western edge of the Nansledan development.
The fayre will be open to the public from 11am – 3pm on Saturday 18th May 2019. The main event entrance is via Yeomans Way on the Sports Centre side of the Orchard.
The Newquay Lions Club will be running a shuttle service back to the town centre for a small donation and keen cyclists can also use Newquay’s various cycle paths. For those coming by car, please use nearby Cornwall Council Trenance car park which is just a short walk to the Orchard. Buses from the town centre stop on Hilgrove Road and Porth Four Turns. There is very limited parking available in the Sports Centre car park next to the Orchard.
We love dogs, but please keep them on a lead during the Fayre. Urban Biodiversity CIC runs Newquay Community Orchard, which is a re-imagined urban green space providing a warm and welcoming community hub for all to enjoy. Working together since January 2015 with more than 500 passionate volunteers from the local community, each week a green field in the heart of Newquay has been transformed into a vibrant community hub providing environmental education, community music and arts events and a sanctuary to be enjoyed by all.
