There’s been more than just birdsong here at the orchard recently! Our musically talented volunteers at Newquay Orchard have been rehearsing a performance over the past few weeks ahead of Make Music Day which took place on Monday 21st June.
The group performed With A Little Help From My Friends, the official song of 2021 Make Music Day, which is an international event to bring people who love music together.
The performance was organised by Jack, a keen guitarist, familiar face to volunteers and our Delivery Officer at Newquay Orchard. Jack was originally one of the first volunteers involved in Newquay Orchard and he believes music is a great way to bring people together.
Jack said: “I first heard about Make Music Day online and thought it was an incredible way to bring volunteers and staff together. Music is so important to me and it’s been fantastic to watch the confidence of our volunteers grow over the past few weeks. What we do here at Newquay Orchard is all about community and making friends and sometimes it’s nice to create something together without getting your hands covered in mud! A special thanks must go to the volunteers for getting involved and especially to Malcolm Joseph for his expertise and support throughout the whole process. We are really looking forward to developing this side to the Orchard delivery and seeing where it takes us.”
The band also sang Stand By Me and were directed by fellow volunteer Malcolm Joseph. Malcolm previously toured with Grace Jones for over a decade before working more recently on the NUB Sessions at The Old Airfield Studios in Padstow.
Malcolm said: “It’s been so much fun to work with everyone on this music. Rehearsing acoustic and outdoors in nature at Newquay Orchard has been amazing. It’s also been great to see how this event has brought people together, I think that’s the really important thing about music is that everyone can join in and make music collectively.”
Malcolm has plans to bring more music to the orchard and believes access to instruments and the opportunity to create music should be for everyone.
