Portraiture_image_child_blackandgrey

Whatever your level or previous experience, this six-week course, with portrait-artist Hugh Appleton, will give you with all the necessary knowledge, understanding, and techniques to achieve a likeness, to draw portraits in charcoal, and to paint portraits in oils.

Some topics we will cover:

  • We’ll look at how to approach composition.
  • We’ll thoroughly explore colour theory and how to build a harmonious palette.
  • You’ll learn how to achieve a likeness, and to see in a way that demystifies the process.
  • You’ll discover ways of developing the most productive mindset for painting.
  • You’ll be given a ‘toolbox’ of hacks, tricks, tips, checks and remedies to help you solve whatever problems you struggle with most.
  • We’ll talk about how the mind is programmed to see what isn’t actually there, and how to short-circuit that mechanism.
  • We’ll discuss how the Impressionists used brand new science relating to colour, to produce the optical illusions for which they’re famous.
  • You’ll learn what exercises will help you to make the fastest progress and to develop your personal style.
  • We’ll explore the relationships between light and dark, warm and cool, hard and soft edges, foreground and background, and how to create captivating paintings.
  • We’ll also take a look at several different artists’ work, past and present, that will inform the way you think about and approach your painting.

Our other main objective, of course, is to have a good time and to leave every day feeling inspired and bursting with creativity!

There will be eight people in the group and most of the time will be spent with each person, in turn, receiving one-to-one support and guidance.

By the end of the course, you will have developed an immensely enjoyable and deeply rewarding process that you can use on a regular basis to further advance your portraiture.
