Harry’s Blog: Spring at the Orchard

Hey Folks, Harry here!

It’s been another busy few weeks on site at the Orchard! As well as carrying on with ongoing projects and courses, everything has been knocked into top gear in anticipation of the upcoming Spring Fayre.

In preparation for the event staff and volunteers have been working away on site getting the final bits and bobs ready. If you wonder what we get up to on site here’s what’s been going on recently:

  • I’ve been helping with building a new fence (gate to be added next week) to enclose our compost bays in a yard to keep everything tidy and safe.
  • In the grow space we’ve added hawk kites on poles, to act as a scarecrow for the polytunnel. Unfortunately, some of the local birdlife has been taking too much of an interest, making a mess and pecking holes in the top of the structure so we need to scare them off!
  • We’ve been landscaping the amphitheatre area, smoothing out the ground with soil left from other landscaping tasks, as this area is where Prodigal UPG will perform Human Zoo during the Spring Fayre (this is one I’m especially looking forward to.)
  • The ground in the event space over the far side of the green house also need some levelling.
  • The forest garden is coming on too as we’ve been up there mulching and planting! One step closer to an edible woodland to forage in year-round.
  • Our little volunteer food truck kitchen has been having all its safety checks so that it can start providing volunteers with lunches really soon, yum!

As always there are numerous other routine tasks and odd jobs going on around the site and its starting to look great with plants growing and apple trees blooming.

I’ve seen the fayre in our local newspaper 2 weeks in a row, plus having heard about the turnout of fayres from previous years, it’s looking to be a highly interesting, busy and popular event.

I’ll look forward to seeing many of you on site on the 18th of May. We will have loads of local makers, producers, food vendors and performers on site from 11am-3pm on Saturday 18th May.

Now here’s Lyn with more information on what you can expect to see on the day…

What’s On at the Spring Fayre?

Hi folks, we’d love you to join us at the Orchard for a celebration of all things spring, on Saturday 18th May, 11am – 3pm.

There will be a market, activities for all the family, yummy food and live music. Bring all the family, do your week’s shop or just hang out and have a picnic.

The fayre is plastic free, and we would encourage people to walk, bike or use public transport to get here where possible. The Newquay Lions Club bus will be running a shuttle service back into town for a small donation.

We’re really excited to have these fab local businesses, organisations and artists joining us for the day:

There will be events and live music:

– Chill out and get bendy at 11:30am with a free morning yoga class in the Orchard with Oceanflow Yoga (weather dependant).

– Pull up a coffee sack cushion in the event space and listen to The Vinyl Collective Newquay from 12-2pm

– Head up to the amphitheatre at 12pm to catch Prodigal Theatre’s Urban Playground team and their show ZOO HUMANS. The half hour performance will be followed by a workshop with audience members keen to learn more about their art and try some of their moves.

– At 2pm Oll an Gwella will take over the tunes and sing us some shanty’s and Cornish tunes.

Bring your little people and;

– Roll up to the event space at 11:15am and listen to a story of apples with Nathan Mansbridge. If you came to our Wassail you’ll remember Nathan!

– get into all day craft activities and cake in the making space with Blystra Arts and Treehouse Newquay.

– Try out family bush craft activities, like fire building and whittling, in the Den with Matt Tolson.

You’ll see demos from Mid Cornwall Woodturners who will be doing demos and selling beautiful wooden goodies. Duchy College Rosewarne will be showing us some green wood working skills.

Come see our friends from Newquay Marine Group, Prickles & Paws Hedgehog Rescue, the Wave Project, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Age UK Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly, South West Water and Plastic Free Newquay for fun activities and local environmental info.

Or visit the Newquay Lions Club kids clothes stall and coconut shy, get glittery with Little Rainbow Arts Face Painting Newquay Cornwall, swing by our grow space, join Hetty and the orchard team and learn about growing your own.

We love dogs, but please keep them on a lead during the Fayre. Come and join the fun 🙂

Massive thanks you to Morrish Builders, CG Fry & Son, Wainhomes South West and The Duchy of Cornwall for sponsoring this event!

See you there!
