Youth mental health day

Youth Mental Health Day encourages understanding and discussion of mental health in young people. This year it’s even more important to reflect on our feelings. Though times have been hard, there is hope. It’s good to talk, and get involved in activities, like here at Newquay Orchard where we discover nature, build a community, and spend time outdoors growing plants and harvesting food. You can learn more about how we can #StrideForward together at the official youth mental health day website.

Our young person’s change coach Matt has 3 tips on how young people can improve their mental health:

• Build resilience through community

Resilience is how we adapt and react to challenges we face in life. It isn’t just about ‘bouncing back’ when you are knocked down by life but it is also about the different protective factors you use to counterbalance any risks we might face.

Resilience building not only applies to you as an individual it also applies to families, relationships and the wider system, be it schools or communities. Here at Newquay Orchard you can improve your confidence and self-esteem by making new connections and having a supportive community where you can find a friend.

• Get outside in nature

Spending time outdoors in a natural space can benefit both your mental health and physical wellbeing. Just walking through the orchard could have many positive effects such as improving your mood, reducing the feelings of stress and anger. It can also give you time to relax.

• Talk to one of our change coaches

Alongside volunteering and education opportunities at Newquay Orchard, our change coach team offer guidance and support for young people looking to improve their mental health.

You can find out more about how we can help with our programmes Compass and Skills your way at our guidance for young people page.
