Embracing Neurodiversity at Newquay Orchard

Embracing Neurodiversity

One of our core principles is that ‘everyone is welcome!’ at Newquay Orchard. Our mission is to offer a supportive environment for individuals with diverse neurological needs, particularly those within the autistic community.

We offer a varied programme of activities ranging from learning, volunteering, wellness classes, coworking spaces, our wonderful cafe ‘Heart & Soul’, a nurture garden and ‘Grown’ our CSA veg bag scheme – where members enjoy a ‘share of the harvest’. In everything we do, we are committed to being inclusive and welcoming to everyone in our community.

Every Thursday, we run health and well-being drop-in sessions from 10 am to 12 pm in Heart & Soul. Come and chat to Emma and the team about anything that is on your mind.. and they will see if they can help and support you. Offering advice and support from housing and mental health to budgeting and community connections – whatever it is, pop in for a chat, find support in a welcoming space where your needs are understood and addressed, it’s the first step. Keep an eye on our socials for activities each week.

Regulars joining us for these sessions are the Autistic Community of Cornwall (ACC), who bring with them a wealth of knowledge, including; mentorship, advocacy, and specialised training, tailored specifically for autistic adults. Through conversations and connections facilitated by the ACC, individuals find a sense of belonging and support and above all… empowerment.

Heart & Soul also run a dedicated quiet hour preceding the drop-in sessions, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am every Thursday, where the cafe adjusts its environment a little to accommodate those with sensory sensitivities, it’s subtle gesture such as dimming lights and a lowering the music volume, to ensure that everyone, regardless of their sensory needs, feels welcomed and comfortable in our space.

Beyond the drop-in sessions, we extend our inclusive ethos to our education programmes. With courses for Adults and Young People, they are designed to cater to diverse learning styles, understanding that traditional education methods may not resonate with everyone. We offer a variety of sessions tailored to different people and their needs – so, whether it’s hands-on workshops on the ground, horticulture qualifications, experiential learning opportunities, or alternative approaches to skill development, there’s something for everyone seeking to expand their horizons in a supportive environment.

Everyone is Welcome!

As dedicated advocates for diversity and inclusivity, we invite our community to explore the educational, volunteering and wellbeing opportunities available here at Newquay Orchard. Whether you’re seeking connection, support, or a place to learn and grow at your own pace, we will welcome you with open arms.
