Imagine Outdoors is on a mission to create fun learning experiences in the natural environment, teaching children through play and curiosity to respect themselves, each other, and the environment, and all the while instilling a natural sense of responsibility for our planet. It’s a passion project for Matt & Gemma, whose mission is to nurture a love for the outdoors in everyone they meet!
We believe in providing opportunities for all, regardless of social, economic, or ability barriers. Our goal is to ensure that every child in Cornwall has access to outdoor learning experiences.
Meet Gemma and Matt – the couple who bring their infectious colour and fun to Newquay Orchard! Gemma and Matt have over 35 years of combined experience in the outdoors and education industry. Meeting at an outdoor education centre in 2011, they’ve been on a mission to share their passion for the environment and outdoor activities together, ever since. And with Gemma’s background in Conservation Biology and Matt’s extensive experience in outdoor pursuits, has laid a solid foundation for a venture that became more than just a business… It’s a way of life, with a core mission to help people across Cornwall access and appreciate the natural beauty around them.
Imagine Outdoors was born from our desire to create a business that not only educates but also inspires. We firmly believe that time spent in nature can profoundly impact one’s well being and personal development.
In today’s society, where screen time dominates, outdoor play is more crucial than ever. Time spent outdoors allows children to express themselves freely, developing their emotional and physical wellbeing. Matt has witnessed firsthand how outdoor activities improve confidence and help children learn in unique ways.
Whole Family Fun
Imagine Outdoors is not just for children; it’s for everyone who wants to explore and connect with nature. They have programs for toddlers to teenagers, tailored clubs for primary-aged children and teenagers, and they host family events where parents, carers, and grandparents are encouraged to join in the fun.
Matt and Gemma just get kids… they understand their varying developmental stages and interests, and create activities to engage and develop each age group. For toddlers, it’s all about introductory experiences like bug houses and nature crafts, moving on to mini bushcraft activities, while teenagers love outdoor survival skills and leadership development – it’s always full of fun and always wild – the kids are encouraged to be themselves, explore and be curious.
We tailor activities to meet the diverse needs of our participants, ensuring everyone feels supported.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Imagine Outdoors is seeing the positive impact on children’s lives. We’ve worked with kids facing various challenges, and every child and family we work with is special. One especially memorable moment was with a young man with SEN (Special Educational Needs) who struggled in group settings, where through our sessions, he made friends, learned new skills, and gained confidence.
As spring and summer approach, we’re gearing up for more outdoor fun. Our programmes are expanding, with a focus on offering more opportunities for free school meal eligible children through the Time to Move holiday program.
Play for Adults
While Imagine Outdoors has always been primarily focused on children, they are excited to announce that they’re developing adult groups too. Just as children benefit from time outdoors, so do adults. So Matt and Gemma are planning activities like foraging and nature wellbeing sessions, because grown-ups need time-out too!
