Newquay Orchard Youth Arts Lab Sessions Spring 2023 with Justin Wiggan

Being curious and having fun with nature is always priority here at Newquay Orchard, and our latest youth arts offer is certainly both.

Justin is an world experienced multi-disciplinary artist in Cornwall, specialising in the connection between culture and nature and working at the forefront of arts and public intervention.

Young people who come to our sessions become special agents, investigators of the sonic world and detectives of the curious unknown. There are no wrong or right answers in our sessions. All feelings and opinions are welcome as we explore how each of us holds a universe inside.

The workshops are available to up to 15 young people from the Newquay area each week. We aim to empower our local young people by offering them a new, exciting experience, using art, sound and the world around us.

In these workshops we seek to provide our young people with a voice. We want to encourage them to look at where they live differently, push boundaries and provide a safe space where they can explore themselves creatively whilst making meaningful connections within their community.

So far, the group our young people have listened to what clouds sound like, using technology that converts image to sound. They have discussed what creativity is and how clouds make us feel and used the model of the Japanese Haiku to pinpoint certain words. We explore the idea of what being ‘normal’ is, and how we feel about taking risks with art and what creating a legacy here in Newquay would look like.

All of this came together to create head imagery, combining our minds and the clouds above us to create sculptures that we have installed around the Newquay Orchard site.

Our sessions run on Wednesdays 3-5pm at the Newquay Orchard site and will be available to local young people aged 14+ until May 2023. If you or your child are interested in attending, please contact the team on info@nqyorchard.pixolomew.design or call us on 01637 877182 to book a place.

Feedback on Arts Lab from Young People

Here is some feedback for quotes:

How do you feel these sessions have gone so far:

A little bit weird

Fun, factual, interesting session, brilliant, joyful

Strange, fascinating, interesting and curious experiences relating back to nature

Interesting, a mystical mash

What would you like to happen in our art sessions at Newquay Orchard:

I want to play and do craft. I want to talk, laugh and have fun

To learn new things

To get more enjoyment

To have fun

I wanna draw stuff in these sessions, have a creative outlet

To understand poetry and haiku

I want to be interested and intrigued

To become better at art

Creativity, curiosity, peace, dexterity, freedom, texture, discovery

What do you think listening to clouds will feel like?

Breezy, peaceful, floaty, fluff

Comfort, dazed, moved, relieved, clenched, hunched, tense, alien, timid, overwhelmed, grounded

What did feeling and listening to clouds actually sound like?:

Like fireworks are going off

Feel it in my spine

Bad feeling

Buzzing feeling

Strange, like an electric shock

A sensation feeling in the chest

Like the clouds are chatty

Ethereal

Bumpy

Feelings, feelings are fragile like glass. You should never judge or hurt people.

Do clouds rave? Yes they do!

A strange, weird sensation

Felt it in my stomach

A reflex test on my spine

My legs became weak

Compelled to do more

As if my spine was being played like a xylophone

Waiting for the next cloud beat
