The Newquay Orchard team are running a new 6 week course giving people aged 18 – 24 the opportunity to grow food and achieve a qualification in horticulture.
Designed for people who are out of work or education the course will take place at Fentenfenna Farm, Ruthvoes, which is a short drive from Newquay and close to St Columb Major station.
Jenny Rogers is one of our change coaches here at Newquay Orchard and is excited about the farm-based learning experience. She believes it is a great opportunity for people who are not engaged in education or employment to add experience to their CV.
Jenny said: “Experience in horticulture is a valuable skill. It will also support the development of vital transferable skills such as team work and communication which are necessary in any work place. People who are interested in reducing food miles, sourcing locally grown vegetables and eating seasonal produce are creating a positive impact on our planet. Working in this sector right now is a way that we can help our local economy and environment work towards a more sustainable future.”
“The Newquay Orchard at the farm programme is exciting. As well as a qualification at the end of it participants will also get a bag of fresh vegetables each week – we want people to see and taste their hard work!” she added.
The course starts on Friday 4 March and is 1 day per week for 6 weeks. Transport to the farm, located in Ruthvoes near St Columb, will be available to participants from pick up locations. Boots and all other relevant personal protective equipment will be provided too.
Additionally people on the programme can enjoy free hot drinks and also use the hours they spend learning to earn TEMPO time credits which they can spend online or on the high street.
If you are eligible and want to learn more about the course you can ask your work coach at Newquay Job Centre or email info@nqyorchard.pixolomew.design for more information.
The Newquay Orchard at the Market Garden course is one of the Change Programmes for young people run by Newquay Orchard. There are Change programmes for young people ages 15 – 24 years old run by COMPASS and Skills Your Way.
